چکیده

We present Gamow-Teller strength distributions from shell model Monte Carlo studies of fp-shell nuclei that may play an important role in the precollapse evolution of supernovae. We then use these strength distributions to calculate the electron-capture cross sections and rates in the zero-momentum transfer limit. We also discuss the thermal behavior of the cross sections. We find large differences in these cross sections and rates when compared to the naive single-particle estimates. These differences need to be taken into account for improved modeling of the early stages of type II supernova

Weak-interaction processes during stellar collapse

Massive stars end their lifes as type II supernovae, triggered by a collapse of their central iron core with a mass of more than 1M . The general picture of a core-collapse supernova is probably well understood and has been confirmed by various observations from supernova 1987A. Nevertheless, the most sophisticated supernova simulations [1, 2, 3] currently fail to explode indicating that improv...

Effect of nuclear structure on Type Ia supernova nucleosynthesis

Nuclear physics plays an important role in stellar evolution. Fusion, proton capture, and neutron capture are all examples of the importance of the electromagnetic interaction in creating energy that powers stars. Weak interactions in nuclei, including electron capture and β-decay, play an important role in the evolution of both Type Ia and II supernovae and their nucleosynthesis. In this brief...

Composition of the Innermost Core Collapse Supernova Ejecta

With presently known input physics and computer simulations in 1D, a self-consistent treatment of core collapse supernovae does not yet lead to successful explosions, while 2D models show some promise. Thus, there are strong indications that the delayed neutrino mechanism works combined with a multi-D convection treatment for unstable layers (possibly with the aid of rotation, magnetic fields a...

Comparison of Two Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Measurement Methods Used For Anatomical Localization of the Iron-Incorporated Deep Brain Nuclei

Introduction Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a new contrast mechanism in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The images produced by the QSM enable researchers and clinicians to easily localize specific structures of the brain, such as deep brain nuclei. These nuclei are targets in many clinical applications and therefore their easy localization is a must. In this study, we aimed to i...
